Nick Reiner appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom Tuesday as prosecutors confirmed they will not seek the death penalty if he is convicted of killing his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.
The 33-year-old appeared at his pretrial hearing in a brown jail uniform, with his hair grown out after previously having a shaved head. His left wrist was handcuffed to his chair as he sat beside his public defender, while his legs remained free.
Reiner answered "Yes" when Judge Sam Ohta asked whether he understood a general time waiver, which means he gave up his right to a speedy trial. He is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 7.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced ahead of the hearing that prosecutors would not pursue capital punishment. District Attorney Nathan J.
Hochman said the decision followed discussions with Reiner's siblings, Romy and Jake, and a review of the circumstances surrounding the case.
"We did speak with Nick Reiner's siblings; they made their views very clear," Hochman said during a news conference. "We took their views into consideration in ultimately deciding not to seek the death penalty."
Hochman stressed that the decision did not lessen the seriousness of the allegations, saying capital punishment should be reserved for "the most egregious instances."
If convicted, Reiner could now face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Reiner has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the Dec. 14, 2025, deaths of his parents at their Brentwood home. Prosecutors allege that he killed the couple by stabbing them and have added a special circumstance allegation that the killings were carried out by lying in wait. He is also accused of personally using a knife.
