The three stars were filmed posing together at the awards ceremony on Sept. 14. In the video, A'Zion, 26, is initially seen hugging Zendaya before stepping away. Photographers then encouraged her to join Zendaya and Roach for another photo.
A'Zion appeared to stand slightly apart from the pair before returning and placing a hand on Roach's arm. As the group posed, Roach leaned his head toward A'Zion, who appeared to pull away. The short exchange prompted speculation online that there could be tension between the actress and the celebrity stylist.
Roach has since addressed the speculation, making it clear that there was no disagreement between them.
The Shade Room shared a statement from Roach in which he explained that the pair had simply been laughing. He also said that he planned to have lunch with A'Zion later in the week, adding that there was "no shade" involved.
Roach styled Zendaya, 30, for the ceremony, where she was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role in Euphoria. The actress wore a custom Prada gown decorated with diamonds and pearls. She completed the look with a Rolex watch, Mikimoto jewelry and a new hairstyle inspired by Halle Berry's iconic short pixie cut.
A'Zion, who recently appeared in I Love LA and Marty Supreme, chose a black velvet pantsuit featuring a plunging blazer and flared trousers. The actress has previously spoken about her approach to fashion, saying her style draws inspiration from rock stars, old music videos, films and the people around her.
Roach also made a statement with his own Emmys look, wearing a colorful Givenchy ensemble designed by Sarah Burton and Boucheron jewelry.
Away from the red carpet, Roach addressed criticism of his judging style on Project Runway. Speaking with Refinery29 before the ceremony, he defended his direct approach and said he believes honesty is part of why he was chosen for the role.
Roach acknowledged that people will have different opinions about his critiques, noting that some viewers appreciate his approach while others do not. He added that criticism is part of being judged publicly, particularly in an environment shaped by social media.
The brief Emmys interaction may have fueled online speculation, but Roach's comments indicate there was no feud between him and A'Zion.
