Taylor Swift has finally revealed what she has been teasing for weeks, announcing a brand-new single titled "Patient Zero"
Swift announced the song Tuesday, Sept. 22, sharing a photo of herself in a black outfit leaning against a concrete wall and looking directly at the camera.
"I've been impatiently waiting to tell you that my brand new single 'Patient Zero' will be out on September 25 (!!!!!!!!!!!!)," Swift wrote on Instagram. She added that the track would be available to preorder on her website for 24 hours.
The song will mark Swift's first new release since The Life of a Showgirl, which arrived in October 2025. That album spent 12 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and produced the Hot 100 No. 1 singles "The Fate of Ophelia" and "Opalite."
Fans had been anticipating an announcement after Swift appeared in a surprise Law & Order: Special Victims Unit sketch during the 2026 Emmys on Sept. 14.
Appearing alongside host Mariska Hargitay, Swift delivered a strange series of phrases while playing a detective.
"I think what we're going to be looking for is hiding in plain sight," she said before adding, "Saccharide. Aries. From the vineyard. North or south."
Swifties quickly began dissecting the message for hidden clues. Looking at the third letter of each phrase produced the word "encore," fueling speculation that Swift could have more surprises planned beyond the new single.
The clues continued on Swift's social media. Earlier Tuesday, she altered her Instagram bio by replacing three letter "o"s with zeroes, reading, "And, baby, that's sh0w business f0r y0u." A countdown clock also appeared on her website ahead of the announcement.
Swift's website is offering three limited-edition CDs of "Patient Zero," featuring standard, acoustic and piano versions of the song. Each edition comes with an alternate cover, with the piano version featuring Swift showing off her engagement ring. The CDs are available for a limited time, with shipments scheduled for October.
The announcement comes just days before Swift receives the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 27, adding another major moment to an already busy month for the pop star.
