Johnny Depp recently paid heartfelt tribute to his former co-star, Tamayo Perry, who tragically lost his life in a shark attack. Perry, known for his role as a buccaneer in the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise (On Stranger Tides, 2011), died while surfing off Malaekahana Beach on the Hawaiian island of Oahu in June.
Depp took to his Instagram Stories to share a poignant black-and-white photograph of Perry with a surfboard. In his message, Depp fondly remembered Perry as “a lovely man, with a huge heart and zest for life.” He addressed Perry’s wife, Emilia, expressing love and strength during this difficult time.
The tragedy prompted a community response, with a GoFundMe page set up to support Emilia as she faces an uncertain future without her husband, best friend, and provider. The fundraiser has already raised $112,643 (£87,622), with a target of $200,000 (£155,575). While it remains unclear whether Depp personally donated, anonymous contributions exceeding $2,000 (£1,555) have poured in.
Tamayo Perry, described as a “legendary waterman,” had also appeared in other notable works such as The Bridge, Blue Crush, and Hawaii Five-0. Local Mayor Rick Blangiardi mourned his loss, emphasizing the impact Perry had on the community.
Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean series remains iconic, but he has not reprised the role since 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales. During a 2022 defamation trial against his former wife and co-star Amber Heard, Depp declared his reluctance to return to the franchise. Despite this, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has expressed interest in Depp’s potential comeback.
In recent years, Depp has faced legal battles and personal challenges, including the successful defamation lawsuit against Heard over a 2018 article. However, he continues to pursue his craft, recently appearing in the French historical drama Jeanne Du Barry as King Louis XV.
