Camila Mendes, widely recognized for her role as Veronica Lodge in the CW series Riverdale, has been cast as Teela in Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films’ highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe. This casting news has generated significant buzz, as Mendes joins Nicholas Galitzine, who will portray He-Man, in bringing the beloved 1980s toy brand to life on the big screen.

The film, directed by Travis Knight, known for his work on Kubo and the Two Strings, is set to hit theaters worldwide on June 5, 2026. The screenplay, penned by Chris Butler, follows initial drafts by David Callaham and brothers Aaron and Adam Nee. The production is being handled by Escape Artists and Mattel Films, ensuring a high-profile, big-budget adaptation that aims to captivate both longtime fans and new audiences alike.

The plot centers around Prince Adam of Eternia, who transforms into the mighty He-Man with the help of his Power Sword. He-Man, endowed with superhuman strength and abilities, leads his allies in defending the planet from the malevolent Skeletor and his forces. Mendes’ character, Teela, is the captain of the royal guard and the adopted daughter of Man-at-Arms, the royal family’s chief inventor of weapons. Teela’s character has been depicted in various animated series as both a fierce warrior and a potential romantic interest for Prince Adam.

Mendes’ casting as Teela is a significant milestone in her career. She screen-tested for the role alongside rising stars Clara Rugaard, Alexandra Shipp, and Quintessa Swindell, ultimately securing the part. Mendes’ recent work includes the 2024 films Upgraded and Música, as well as a leading role in Sony’s reboot of the horror movie I Know What You Did Last Summer, set to shoot this fall.

Nicholas Galitzine, known for his role in The Idea of You, will take on the iconic role of He-Man. His casting, along with Mendes’, signals a fresh and dynamic approach to the beloved franchise. The film aims to blend nostalgia with modern storytelling, appealing to both original fans of the 1980s series and a new generation of viewers.

The anticipation for Masters of the Universe is palpable, with fans eagerly awaiting how this live-action adaptation will bring the fantastical world of Eternia to life. With a talented cast and a visionary director at the helm, the film promises to be a thrilling addition to the legacy of Masters of the Universe.
