Chloé Zhao, the Academy Award-winning director known for “Nomadland” and “The Rider,” has secured her next major project, “Hamnet,” with Focus Features handling U.S. distribution. The film, which began production in Wales in July 2024, has attracted considerable attention, especially with the recent announcement that legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg has joined as a producer.

“Hamnet” is an adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s critically acclaimed 2020 novel of the same name, which reimagines the life of William Shakespeare’s family, focusing on the devastating impact of the death of his only son, Hamnet, in 1596. The story intricately weaves historical elements with fiction, exploring the grief of Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes (better known as Anne Hathaway), and how this tragedy may have influenced the writing of the playwright’s masterpiece, ‘Hamlet’.

The cast is led by Oscar nominees Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, with Buckley portraying Agnes and Mescal taking on the role of Shakespeare. They are joined by Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn, rounding out an impressive ensemble that promises to bring depth to this poignant narrative.

Zhao, who also co-wrote the screenplay with O’Farrell, is making her return to more intimate storytelling after the mixed reception of her Marvel film “Eternals.” Her direction in “Hamnet” is highly anticipated, as it offers a return to the emotionally resonant and visually poetic style that won her critical acclaim with earlier works.

The film Is being produced by a powerhouse team, including Spielberg, Sam Mendes, and Pippa Harris, ensuring that “Hamnet” will have the backing of some of the most influential figures in the industry. The production is handled by Amblin Partners, Hera Pictures, and Neal Street Productions, with Focus Features set to distribute the film in the U.S. and Universal Pictures managing international distribution.

“Hamnet” does not yet have a confirmed release date, but given the talent involved and the source material’s literary pedigree, it is already being viewed as a potential awards contender in the coming years.

This project marks another exciting chapter in Zhao’s career, as she continues to explore complex human emotions against the backdrop of richly textured narratives. With Spielberg’s involvement, “Hamnet” is shaping up to be one of the most eagerly awaited films on the horizon.
