In an interview with Collider and Total Film, Russo confirmed that the third film is well into development and that filming is slated for 2025. This comes after months of speculation following the release of Extraction 2 in 2023, which ended with a tantalizing hint at Tyler Rake’s next mission. Sam Hargrave, who directed the first two installments, will return to direct, and Chris Hemsworth is set to reprise his role as the fearless mercenary.
Russo explained that the new film will dive deeper into Tyler Rake’s character, continuing to explore the emotional scars and trauma that drive him. “It’s an interesting franchise because he’s a very emotionally wounded character,” Russo said. “His relationship with violence is built around self-loathing and guilt, which adds a lot of texture to the storytelling”. Although specific plot details are being kept under wraps, it’s likely that Extraction 3 will pick up where the previous film left off. At the end of Extraction 2, Idris Elba’s character, Alcott, offered Rake a mysterious new mission.
