The Marvel Cinematic Universe, following its short rest in 2024, will roar again. This means 2025 has been prepared for: “Captain America: Brave New World”, the ensemble “Thunderbolts”, and an introduction to Marvel’s First Family in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”. The films that were to hit in between only prepare a path to the mammoth release, “Avengers: Secret Wars”, which was set for May 7, 2027.

A big part of that Is the fact that directors Joe and Anthony Russo return with screenwriter Stephen McFeely for “Avengers: Secret Wars.” The Russos, who have helmed some of the more highly regarded Marvel movies like “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Avengers: Endgame,” had said “Endgame” was their last MCU film. But the storyline for “Secret Wars” lit a fire again in them. Anthony Russo said, “Endgame was the end, and it took a little time for us to begin to think about it as something other than an end. Really what happened was, we ended up stumbling upon an idea that activated all of us.”

The storyline of "Secret Wars” is supposed to be one of the most ambitious in the MCU, drawing inspiration from the iconic comic book arc that mashed together many universes and characters. This movie is expected to mark a significant point for MCU since it will introduce several characters and connect many complicated storylines. Notably, it’ll see the unparalleled return of Robert Downey Jr. this time as the mysterious Doctor Victor von Doom, slating him as one of the main antagonists of this new saga.

The decision to bring the Russo brothers and McFeely back into the MCU fold has been met with excitement from fans and industry insiders alike. Past collaborations between the two have resulted in some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful films of the franchise. Their return is expected to bring a mix of innovative storytelling with dynamic action sequences that have become their trademark.

Along with “Secret Wars,” the future slate for the MCU includes “Avengers: Doomsday” in May 2026, continuing to build into “Secret Wars.” The MCU also has in store the integration of the Fantastic Four and the introduction of mutants, which will mark a whole new phase of the universe.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige stated that “Avengers: Secret Wars” will indeed start a whole new era for mutants in the MCU, expanding the universe to new levels of scope and depth. With the MCU embarking on this ambitious phase, the collaboration of the Russo brothers, McFeely, and an ensemble cast will surely bring forth a film that will leave audiences enthralled and set new standards in the superhero genre. Anticipation for “Avengers: Secret Wars” only increases with the promise of a narrative that will change the very boundaries within which the Marvel Cinematic Universe operates.
