John Cena is back in action—and in conflict with himself. HBO Max debuted the official trailer for Peacemaker Season 2 at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H, where Cena arrived in full costume to promote the long-awaited return of his DC antihero. He was joined onstage by showrunner and DC Studios co-head James Gunn, alongside cast members Frank Grillo, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, Sol Rodriguez, and Tim Meadows.
The new season picks up after the explosive events of Season 1 and dives headfirst into a multiverse plot. The trailer reveals that Christopher Smith, a.k.a. Peacemaker, escapes his troubles by crossing into an alternate dimension—a world where “the grass is greener.” The inter-dimensional hop isn’t without consequences. Downbeat and rejected by Holland’s Emilia Harcourt, Peacemaker’s new life causes chaos across realities. And that’s not the worst of it: he now faces an alternate version of himself.
Complicating things further, Frank Grillo joins the cast as Rick Flag Sr., head of A.R.G.U.S., the covert government agency. He’s tracking Peacemaker after Smith killed his son, Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) in The Suicide Squad. The father-son vendetta adds emotional weight and high stakes to the upcoming season.
One of the biggest cultural moments from Season 1 was its offbeat and unexpectedly viral dance number in the opening credits. According to Gunn, Season 2 won’t try to replicate or outdo it—but it will offer something fresh. “It isn’t trying to one-up the first season,” Gunn explained. “It’s bigger, there’s a different vibe to it. New characters, different dancers.”
Jennifer Holland hinted at a special moment in the new sequence: a nod to Dirty Dancing. “We have an amazing choreographer who took James’ idea and made something special,” Holland said. “I don’t want to spoil anything, but I requested to the universe, ‘Please allow me to do the lift from Dirty Dancing.’ I got to do a lift and it’s amazing.” Grillo added with a laugh, “The dancing started out as something I reluctantly did and it turned into me being the best dancer on stage.”
Peacemaker Season 2 premieres August 21 on HBO Max and will run for eight episodes. It marks the first season since Gunn and Peter Safran took over as co-CEOs of DC Studios, following a major reshaping of the DC Universe. The time gap—over three years since Season 1 aired in early 2022—has only fueled fan anticipation.
Cena’s Peacemaker first appeared in Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad as a hyper-patriotic mercenary working for A.R.G.U.S. In Season 1, he helped stop a global alien invasion and even had a cameo alongside the Justice League. He most recently popped up in Gunn’s new Superman movie, appearing as a guest on a conservative talk show.
With multiverse intrigue, unresolved vendettas, and another unforgettable dance number, Peacemaker Season 2 is shaping up to be both chaotic and cathartic.
