More than 20 years after the original Freaky Friday became a global sensation, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis reunite in Freakier Friday, a sequel that reflects on motherhood, family, and the chaos of life from a fresh, more mature perspective.

Premiering at London’s Leicester Square, the film picks up with Lohan’s character, Anna, now a mother herself. She’s navigating the complexities of raising a daughter while also stepping into the role of a stepmother. The film kicks things up a notch with a quadruple body swap, multiplying the humor, confusion, and emotional depth that made the original a fan favorite.

Speaking at the premiere, Lohan told the BBC that making a sequel felt natural: “Fans love the movie and there’s such a strong loyalty. It made people so happy and I like to make movies that make people feel joy. There’s so much going on in the world now that it’s nice to make something that allows people to forget about what’s going on.”

This film marks Lohan’s return to Disney for the first time in over a decade. After stepping away from the spotlight for much of the 2010s, she made her big-screen return in 2022 with Falling for Christmas. Now, at 39, with a new marriage and motherhood under her belt, she says acting again felt right. “I love what I do and I know that always shows through in my work,” she said.

Her experience as a new parent has also reshaped her understanding of the film’s central themes. “When you become a mum, your whole life changes,” she said. “It’s important to be able to balance work and being a mum which is definitely a learning process.”

Lohan also reflected on her past struggles in the public eye, saying she would tell her younger self to slow down. “Just breathe because it’s all coming,” she advised.

Curtis, who won an Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once, echoed the importance of the film’s themes. “Understanding is in short supply right now in the world,” she said. “This film shows that if you can experience each other’s life then maybe you will find some common ground.”

Curtis revealed that the sequel was her idea. “We needed Lindsay to be old enough to have a 15-year-old child in the film,” she explained. The bond between the two stars has remained strong, with Curtis saying, “We’ve always been united. I take great responsibility to make sure they [young actors] can always count on my friendship and love.”

Freakier Friday also features Chad Michael Murray reprising his role as Jake, and newcomer Julia Butters as Lohan’s daughter. The film hits cinemas on Friday, 8 August, joining a wave of nostalgic sequels like Bend It Like Beckham 2 and the upcoming Devil Wears Prada continuation.

With a blend of comedy, heartfelt emotion, and a multi-generational take on family life, Freakier Friday aims to connect with both new viewers and longtime fans.
