Prime Video is diving into the Old Testament. The streamer has officially ordered Joseph of Egypt, an eight-episode limited series starring Adam Hashmi in the title role. The biblical drama, penned and executive produced by Craig Wright, is now in production in New Mexico.

Co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios and The Chosen creator Dallas Jenkins’ 5&2 Studios, the series revisits one of scripture’s most enduring stories. Hashmi plays Joseph, the favored son whose life is upended when he is betrayed by his jealous brothers. Rising from slavery and imprisonment, Joseph defies all expectations to become second only to Pharaoh in Egypt — until his past resurfaces, bringing him face-to-face with his ultimate test.

A Stacked Ensemble Cast

Joining Hashmi in lead roles are Alexander Siddig (Foundation, Shantaram) as patriarch Jacob, Babak Tafti (Succession, Billions) as Simeon, Daniel Peera (The Cleaning Lady, NCIS) as Reuben, and Iris Bahr (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Svetlana) as Leah.

Recurring players include Dakota Shapiro (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Valley of the Boom) as Ashur, Tannaz Shastiri (Hacks, Ramy) as Eliuram, Ruben Vernier (Monsters, This Is Us) as Gad, Amir Malaklou (The Old Man, Your Friends & Neighbors) as Judah, Moran Atias (Tyrant, Animal Kingdom) as Bilhah, Necar Zadegan (Mayor of Kingstown, 24) as Zilapah, Matisse Ratron-Neal (The Night Agent, Law & Order) as Issachar, Shani Atias (The Pitt, Shameless) as Rachel, and Siya Maleki (The Bones Exist, Kill Me) as Levi.

Creative Leadership

Wright, whose previous work includes Greenleaf and Dirty Sexy Money, will serve as showrunner in addition to his writing duties. Jenkins — who has built a devoted global following with The Chosen — joins as executive producer under his 5&2 Studios banner. Brad Pelo, Mark Sourian, Ryan Swanson, and Tyler Thompson also board as executive producers.

The production underscores Prime Video’s ongoing push into faith-based programming, a strategy strengthened by the streamer’s first-look deal with 5&2 Studios. Under the agreement, Prime Video secured rights to the first five seasons of The Chosen and will also host the upcoming The Chosen in the Wild with Bear Grylls. The service will exclusively stream the final two seasons of The Chosen, depicting the crucifixion (Season 6) and the resurrection (Season 7).

Building on a Proven Formula

For Prime Video, Joseph of Egypt extends a partnership that has already delivered significant audience engagement. For Jenkins, it represents a chance to apply the same combination of character-driven storytelling and large-scale biblical worldbuilding that propelled The Chosen into a multi-season success.

With cameras rolling in New Mexico, Joseph of Egypt is expected to blend sweeping period visuals with intimate human drama, capturing the political intrigue, family betrayal, and personal redemption that have made Joseph’s story resonate for millennia. The series is slated to premiere exclusively on Prime Video, though a release date has yet to be announced.
