Dean McDermott, the 57-year-old actor, responded to Tori Spelling's divorce filing by submitting his own legal documents on Monday. The actor opposed Spelling's bid for sole custody of their children, instead requesting joint physical and legal custody, according to court papers obtained by Page Six.
The former couple, who share five children together - Liam, 17, Stella, 15, Hattie, 12, Finn, 11, and Beau, seven - are entangled in a legal battle over custody arrangements. McDermott also sought spousal support for himself while petitioning the court to terminate Spelling's spousal support, mirroring her initial request. Both parties are also seeking the other to cover their respective attorneys' fees.
McDermott's court filing comes weeks after Spelling disclosed the reasons behind her decision to end their 18-year marriage. Spelling, 50, admitted on her podcast, "misSpelling," that preconceived notions about her character had hindered her from moving forward, citing societal expectations and labels.
"One of my biggest fears, and this perhaps did make me stay longer, is I feel like in our world it's difficult to be with a man and have him not feel emasculated," she expressed to Shannen Doherty, her podcast co-host.
Despite their impending divorce, Spelling emphasized an amicable relationship with McDermott and his new girlfriend, Lily Calo. She even described enjoying family meals with them, indicating a commitment to effective co-parenting.
However, Spelling recounted a heated argument with McDermott in June 2023, which led to their split. Following McDermott's alleged hurtful remark, Spelling impulsively smashed a baked potato on the kitchen floor in anger.
The fallout from the argument prompted Spelling to reflect on the state of their marriage, noting their physical separation for three years prior. McDermott's subsequent demand for a divorce marked a pivotal moment for Spelling, who felt liberated by his declaration.
McDermott's public announcement of their divorce via Instagram further solidified Spelling's decision to move forward. Despite initially deleting the post, news of their split had already circulated widely.
In a revealing interview, McDermott expressed his enduring love for Spelling despite their marital challenges. He attributed their marital breakdown to personal struggles, including his addiction issues.
