Country music star Maren Morris recently opened up about the emotional journey of co-parenting her son, Hayes Andrew, with her ex-husband, Ryan Hurd.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Morris shared insights into her life post-divorce and the inspiration behind her new EP, Intermission. One of the tracks, "Because, Of Course," is a heartfelt dedication to her son. "I wrote it about him," Morris confirmed. "It's obviously my promise to him: Every love like that, especially a mother's, should be unconditional."
Morris and Hurd finalized their divorce in January, but they have remained united in their efforts to provide a stable and loving environment for Hayes. "I feel like there's so many emotions when you have a child with somebody and the relationship doesn't pan out," Morris explained. "You just have to put on a brave face and a consistent face for your baby."
The singer acknowledged the difficulties that come with co-parenting, especially when the relationship between the parents has ended. "I think he's gone through a lot and there's I'm sure a lot of confusion because he's so little," Morris said. "But also, I feel like Ryan and I have done a really great job at just being great parents for him".
Morris also touched on the joy she finds in spending time with her son, particularly when they are on the road together. "He loves being on the road, which has been so much fun this summer, having Hayes out," she shared. "I don't know, we feel like partners in crime a little bit, and we're going to be on this bus journey for forever".
The journey of co-parenting has not been without its emotional ups and downs. Morris described the experience as one filled with "so many emotions," but she remains focused on the positive aspects. "It just makes me so happy when he's out and the fact that he loves it out here so much," she said.
Morris's reflections on her co-parenting journey come at a time when she is also navigating her personal life post-divorce. She has spoken candidly about the challenges of finding a new romantic partner and the qualities she looks for in a relationship. "I'm looking for a 'spectacularly impressive individual' while dating," Morris revealed in a recent interview.
Despite the personal challenges, Morris continues to thrive professionally. Her new EP, Intermission, is set to be released soon, and she remains dedicated to her music and her role as a mother. "I just want to be a good mom for my son," she emphasized.
