BP has announced its largest oil and gas find in a quarter-century, revealing a significant discovery in Brazil's Santos Basin that may reshape its upstream ambitions and long-term output strategy.
The Bumerangue field, located roughly 400 kilometers off the Brazilian coast, is being hailed by the company as potentially its most substantial discovery since Shah Deniz in 1999. While exact reserve estimates remain under wraps, early data suggest the field could become a central hub for future production. "This is another success in what has been an exceptional year," said Gordon Birrell, BP's chief of production and operations, reinforcing the company's renewed commitment to fossil fuels.
The announcement comes amid a broader industry resurgence in Brazil. Shell has already greenlit a new project in the same basin. BP, which acquired the Bumerangue block under what it described as "very good commercial terms" in 2022, has now tallied ten discoveries across multiple geographies this year, including Egypt, Trinidad, and the Gulf of Mexico.
Analysts see the Brazilian find as pivotal. "The data... provide support that the potential scale for this 100% BP discovery could be a game changer," wrote Bernstein's Irene Himona. She noted the find could extend BP's upstream momentum into the 2030s and beyond, a key concern for investors watching the firm's shifting production outlook.
Shares of BP rose 1.3% following the announcement, outpacing the broader European energy index. The company expects daily production of 2.3 to 2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent by 2030. In 2024, output stood at 2.4 million barrels per day, with a slight dip projected for 2025.
The discovery also comes as BP reshuffles its leadership. Incoming chair Albert Manifold joins at a time of intensified pressure from shareholders, including activist hedge fund Elliott Management, which has called for a strategic overhaul and board changes.
