The 43-year-old 10-time All-Star made his final appearance for the Detroit Tigers on Saturday, Sept. 26, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. During the sixth inning, Tigers manager AJ Hinch walked onto the field and signaled toward the stands for Verlander's 7-year-old daughter, Genevieve, to come onto the field.
Genevieve, whom Verlander shares with wife Kate Upton, ran toward her father wearing a Tigers jersey featuring his name and number. Verlander immediately became emotional as the two embraced, with the pitcher breaking down in tears. Fans at Comerica Park responded with a standing ovation.
Verlander was then surrounded by his Tigers teammates, who hugged him before he walked off the mound while holding Genevieve's hand.
Afterward, Upton joined them on the warning track while carrying the couple's 15-month-old son, Bellamy. The family shared another hug before Verlander tipped his hat to the crowd and headed into the dugout.
Speaking after Detroit's 4-3 walk-off victory, Verlander said he had no idea the surprise was coming.
"I was totally blindsided, and it hit me like a ton of bricks," he said. Verlander added that he had to reassure Genevieve that he was crying because he was happy, since she had never seen him cry before.
The veteran pitcher reflected on the sacrifices that came with his two-decade career and the time he spent away from his family.
"I've been a baseball player since I was 5 years old," Verlander said. "I gave everything for this. I left home. She's in school, and I wasn't there."
He said his family means everything to him and that he was grateful for the opportunity to spend more time with them.
Hinch later revealed that he had worked with Upton to organize the surprise. The manager said Verlander is difficult to surprise and that he wanted to create a moment centered on the pitcher's pride in being a father.
Verlander announced his retirement in July after revealing that the 2026 season would be his final year. Injuries limited him to just one start during the season, including a left hip issue and a hamstring injury.
Across 21 MLB seasons, Verlander recorded 266 wins, won three Cy Young Awards, claimed an MVP award and captured two World Series championships with the Houston Astros.
