The inaugural Athlos event, a groundbreaking track and field meet featuring only female athletes, took place in New York on Thursday, offering world-class competitors a chance to win unprecedented prize money. Launched by entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian, the meet aimed to showcase top-tier women's athletics, with race winners receiving $60,000—double the prize offered at the prestigious Diamond League finale.
Ohanian, known for his investments in women's sports and cofounding Reddit, created the event to elevate women's athletics and provide greater financial rewards. "I wanted to make sure these athletes got what they deserved," Ohanian explained, adding that the prize money was designed to reflect the athletes' incredible talent.
The event featured prominent stars like triple Olympic gold medalist Gabby Thomas and world record holder Faith Kipyegon. Kipyegon clinched victory in the 1500m, while American Brittany Brown edged out Gabby Thomas in the 200m. Dominican Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino triumphed in the 400m.
Ohanian's vision for Athlos is to continue expanding the event, promoting women's track and field, and highlighting the growing fan engagement in women's sports. The success of the inaugural event signals a bright future for Athlos as a premier stage for women's athletics, further propelling the sport into the spotlight.
