For Australian field hockey player Matt Dawson, however, preparations took an unusual and drastic turn this year. The 30-year-old opted to have part of his finger amputated to ensure his participation in the Games.

French cyclist Julien Bernard was fined 200 Swiss francs (205 euros) by the International Cycling Union (UCI) for stopping to kiss his wife during the seventh stage time trial of the Tour de France. The incident occurred fifteen minutes into Friday's time trial in  Bernard's home region of Burgundy.

Japanese Olympic gymnast Shoko Miyata will miss the 2024 Paris Olympics due to violations involving smoking and drinking alcohol. The 19-year-old, who captains Japan's women's artistic gymnastics team, was sent back to Japan on Thursday, July 18, just 10 days before the global competition, as reported by the Japanese Gymnastics Association (JGA) and multiple news outlets.

Dutch rider Dylan Groenewegen secured a dramatic victory in stage six of the Tour de France, edging out competitors in a photo finish. The flat 163.5km route from Macon to Dijon was anticipated to conclude in a bunch sprint, following Mark Cavendish's record-
breaking win a day earlier.
