Real Madrid and Brazil winger Vinicius Jr has been crowned the FIFA Best Men's Player of the Year, marking his first win of this prestigious award. The 24-year-old received the honor during the FIFA Best Awards ceremony in Doha, Qatar. This comes shortly after he and Real Madrid boycotted the Ballon d'Or ceremony, where he lost to Manchester City's Rodri.

Vinicius had a standout 2023-24 season, playing a pivotal role in Real Madrid's success. He scored 24 goals and provided 11 assists, contributing to the team's Champions League and La Liga titles. Reflecting on his journey, Vinicius shared: "It seemed impossible when I played barefoot in the streets of São Gonçalo, and now I'm here."

The FIFA Best Awards are decided through a mix of votes from fans, journalists, national team captains, and managers, with each group's vote accounting for 25%. This year's voting period covered performances from August 2023 to August 2024.

Vinicius beat out tough competition, including Spain's Rodri, who finished second, and his Real Madrid teammate Jude Bellingham, who came third. Notably, Spain's national team coach and captain opted for Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal, while Brazil's representatives unanimously backed Vinicius.

England captain Harry Kane ranked Rodri first, followed by Bellingham and Vinicius. Meanwhile, former interim England manager Lee Carsley placed Bellingham at the top of his list, with Rodri second and Barcelona's Lamine Yamal third. Scotland manager Steve Clarke and Wales boss Craig Bellamy both chose Rodri as their top pick, while Wales captain Aaron Ramsey favored Vinicius.

The award caps a memorable year for Vinicius, offering a brighter conclusion after the October controversy surrounding the Ballon d'Or. Lionel Messi won the FIFA Best Men's Player Award in the two previous editions, with Robert Lewandowski winning the two before that.

Earlier in the night, Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmatí was named FIFA Best Women's Player for the second consecutive year.

Vinicius and Real Madrid remain in Qatar, where they will face Mexican side Pachuca in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final at Lusail Stadium on Wednesday.
