After shining at the European Championship last summer, Lamine Yamal is still finding new ways to impress. The 17-year-old made Champions League history on Tuesday, becoming the youngest player ever to score and assist in the competition as he led Barcelona to a 3-1 victory over Benfica, securing a 4-1 aggregate win and a spot in the quarter-finals.

This season, Yamal has already contributed to 28 goals and is closing in on 60 goal involvements for club and country—a remarkable feat for someone so young. His confidence on the pitch defies his age, perfectly demonstrated by his stunning performance against Benfica.

Yamal first showcased his vision and creativity with a brilliant assist, weaving through defenders before threading a perfect pass to Raphinha, who volleyed home. Moments later, he took matters into his own hands, curling a sensational strike into the far corner from the edge of the box.

"Lamine hadn't scored for over a month, so he's happy because it was an important goal for us," said Barcelona manager Hansi Flick. "We are all happy for him—he's a great kid and a fantastic player."

Barcelona will now face either Borussia Dortmund or Lille in the quarter-finals, with Yamal expected to play a crucial role. His performances have drawn comparisons to some of football's greatest young talents, including Wayne Rooney.

Former England midfielder Owen Hargreaves praised Yamal's consistency, calling him the best 17-year-old he has ever seen. "You see young players have flashes of brilliance, but this kid is unbelievable," Hargreaves said. "He scores, he creates, and he makes it look effortless."

Yamal has already played 50 games for Barcelona and made 36 appearances this season, proving his importance to the team. However, former Liverpool and England winger Steve McManaman warned about the dangers of overplaying him at such a young age.

"You have to be careful," McManaman cautioned. "We saw what happened with Pedri, Ansu Fati, and Gavi—playing too much at a young age led to serious injuries. Barcelona knows how to nurture young talent, but they must manage him carefully to avoid burnout."

For now, Yamal continues to dazzle, with his skill, composure, and impact on the game making him one of football's most exciting young prospects. His team-mate Raphinha summed it up best: "His goal was spectacular."
