There's a growing sense of optimism at Liverpool that club captain Virgil van Dijk will soon follow Mohamed Salah in agreeing to a new contract. While nothing is finalized yet, sources indicate Van Dijk is very close to committing to a two-year extension. Salah is also in advanced discussions for a similar deal. Although neither contract is signed, it would now take an unexpected shift for either player to leave before next season begins.

These developments are a major boost for Liverpool, who are currently sitting 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League. Securing the futures of two of their most influential players not only strengthens the squad but also brings stability to the club during a period of transition under new manager Arne Slot. The two-year contract length is significant, as it helps avoid another year of uncertainty around key players' futures — a narrative that has loomed large over the season despite the club's likely league title triumph.

However, not all contract situations have been resolved. Talks with Trent Alexander-Arnold have reportedly stalled, and he's now linked with a potential free transfer to Real Madrid. Losing such a crucial player would pose another challenge for Liverpool in the summer.

Van Dijk staying would remove a key concern from the club's recruitment list. Had he departed, Liverpool would have likely pursued a new first-choice central defender. Names like Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi and Bournemouth's Dean Huijsen had been considered, but the urgency may now ease. However, Ibrahima Konaté's contract is nearing its final year, and decisions will need to be made if a new deal isn't agreed upon soon. The futures of Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez also remain uncertain.

Salah's expected renewal brings equally good news. With 54 goal contributions — including 32 goals — already this season, his value to the squad is undeniable. Interest from the Saudi Pro League had been growing, but Liverpool appear poised to retain the Egyptian star.

With finances largely preserved last summer, Liverpool are preparing to be active in the upcoming transfer window. A central striker is high on the priority list, with Newcastle's Alexander Isak among the names discussed, though prying him from St James' Park seems difficult. The club is also eyeing at least one new full-back, especially with doubts over Alexander-Arnold's future and Andy Robertson's long-term role. Fulham's Antonee Robinson and Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez are among the potential targets.
