The Magpies submitted an improved proposal that included a £35 million initial payment with an additional £5 million in potential add-ons. Negotiations between the two clubs were reopened on Wednesday, but sources confirmed to BBC Sport that the bid still fell short of Brentford's valuation of the 28-year-old.
Wissa had held talks with Brentford's owner, Matthew Benham, on Tuesday. That meeting is believed to have influenced Newcastle's decision to return with a higher offer. Their previous bid for the player had been valued at around £30 million.
The forward has recently fueled speculation about his future by removing all Brentford-related content from his Instagram account. Wissa, who represents the Democratic Republic of Congo internationally, is understood to be keen on making the switch to Newcastle after scoring 19 goals in the Premier League last season.
Tensions around his potential exit first surfaced in July when Wissa left Brentford's pre-season camp in Portugal earlier than expected. Reports suggested he even threatened to stop playing or training for the Bees unless they allowed his move to Tyneside. Although relations appeared to improve slightly afterwards, and he returned to first-team training, Wissa has consistently made it clear that his preference is a transfer to Newcastle.
The striker's belief that Brentford would eventually grant his request was linked to the club's pursuit of a replacement. After completing the signing of Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth, Wissa expected his move north would finally be sanctioned this week.
However, Brentford remain firm in their stance. The west London side have already lost fellow forward Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United earlier this summer, which has made them reluctant to part with another key attacker.
For now, Newcastle's hopes of securing Wissa remain uncertain, with Brentford holding out for a valuation they feel matches the striker's importance. The situation continues to unfold as the transfer window progresses, with Wissa waiting to see if his desired move will eventually materialize.
