The 24-year-old was forced off during Liverpool's 4-2 victory over Bournemouth in their opening league game last weekend. As a result, he will miss Monday's clash with Newcastle United at St James' Park as well as the following week's home match against Arsenal.
Head coach Arne Slot explained that the decision to withdraw Frimpong was made on medical advice. "I think I got criticised for taking him off, didn't I?" Slot joked during his pre-match press conference on Thursday. "It had nothing to do with his performance. The medical staff felt there was an issue with his hamstring. It was a good call to bring him off. We expect him back after the international break."
The break runs from September 1 to 9, with the Premier League resuming on the weekend of September 13-14. Liverpool will return to action against Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday, September 14, and Frimpong is expected to be available for that fixture.
His absence leaves Liverpool stretched in the right-back position. Signed from Bayer Leverkusen in May for £29.5 million to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold following his move to Real Madrid, Frimpong was expected to be a key figure in Slot's defense this season.
Conor Bradley only rejoined first-team training on Thursday after his own spell on the sidelines, while Joe Gomez, who has a history of long injury layoffs, has been unable to train consistently after filling in late against Bournemouth.
"Jeremie has a very positive injury record, and Conor was only out once or twice last season," Slot said. "At the moment, we have just two injuries, but unfortunately both are in the same position. The good thing is we have other players who can step in. Wataru Endo has played there, Dominik Szoboszlai as well. Joe Gomez is definitely an option, though for him even 20 minutes is already a lot. He is training with the team, so we will see if he can be involved on Monday. You cannot really prepare for two injuries in one position."
