Premier League referee Anthony Taylor has spoken out against what he calls football's "expectation of perfection," criticizing the culture of abuse directed toward referees and its impact on mental health. In a candid interview with BBC Sport, Taylor revealed that his family no longer attends his matches after facing hostility from fans, particularly during an incident at Budapest Airport following the 2023 Europa League final.

Taylor, who has been a Premier League referee for nearly 15 years and officiated major tournaments including the 2022 World Cup and the European Championships, said the abuse he received from Roma fans after that final was "the worst situation" he has ever faced. Roma manager José Mourinho had confronted him after losing to Sevilla, later calling him a "disgrace." Taylor said he felt the criticism unfairly shifted blame onto him, even though there were "no major mistakes in the game." He admitted the incident made him question whether bringing his family to matches had been a mistake, noting they haven't attended one since.

Taylor believes football's "win-at-all-costs" mentality is damaging not just for referees at the top level but also for young officials at grassroots matches, where verbal abuse from spectators has become common. "Every weekend, you can go to any park across the UK and see a parent shouting at a young referee," he said. "That's not how you create an environment where people improve."

He acknowledged that scrutiny comes with the job but argued that criticism in football is rarely balanced. "Nobody talks about the positive side of things. People always see the game through the eyes of their own team," he said. "One decision doesn't define a season."

Taylor also addressed the impact of VAR, saying the technology has intensified the demand for error-free officiating. "Perfection doesn't exist," he said. "VAR was never meant to create a decision-making utopia. People need to decide what they really want. One week they say VAR ruins the flow of the game, the next week they're angry it didn't intervene."
