Ceferin acknowledged the difficulty of choosing a winner, describing it as "heartbreaking" that any of the three final bidders had to miss out. Moments later, he opened the envelope and confirmed Germany as the hosts for the next edition of the tournament.
The 2029 competition will feature 16 national teams and unfold across eight German cities Cologne, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hanover, Leipzig, Munich and Wolfsburg , offering a wide geographic spread and a mix of historic and modern football venues. Germany's robust infrastructure, extensive experience in staging major tournaments, and fan culture were key strengths highlighted in their bid.
Portugal and Italy had initially entered the race to host the championship but later withdrew. Both nations opted instead to channel their efforts into joint bids for the men's Euro 2032 and the 2030 men's World Cup, leaving three finalists in contention for the women's event.
When voting concluded, Germany emerged as a clear favourite, securing 15 votes from the committee. Denmark and Sweden's joint proposal received two votes, while Poland did not register any.
For Germany, hosting the 2029 finals will mark the third time they have staged the Women's Euro. They previously hosted the event in 2001 and, as West Germany, in 1989 , going on to win the title on both occasions. The German national team remains the most successful side in the competition's history, having claimed eight European crowns.
Bernd Neuendorf, president of the German Football Association (DFB), expressed gratitude after the announcement, emphasising the extensive work that went into preparing the bid. "It was a long journey. We have so many people at the DFB who dedicated themselves to securing this tournament," he said. "Thanks to all who supported us , we felt this support throughout the campaign."
The most recent tournament, held in Switzerland in 2025, saw England defeat Spain on penalties after a tense 1–1 draw, successfully defending their title. As England look ahead to 2029, they will aim for a historic hat-trick, a feat only Germany has accomplished , with their remarkable run of six consecutive titles from 1995 to 2013.
