Carrick briefly served as caretaker manager in 2021, while Solskjaer previously held the role before being appointed permanently. There is also the possibility that the two could work together, as Carrick was a key member of Solskjaer's coaching staff after the Norwegian replaced Jose Mourinho in 2018. Their familiarity with the club and its environment is viewed as a significant advantage during a period of transition.
Darren Fletcher, who currently coaches United's under-18 side, has also been spoken to about the position. For now, Fletcher will continue as interim manager and will oversee Wednesday's Premier League fixture away to Burnley. Following that match, the club is expected to resume the process of appointing a caretaker manager. One source has indicated that United have not ruled out a shared arrangement or even the possibility of Fletcher remaining in charge until the end of the campaign if results are encouraging.
Former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is also understood to be under consideration. The changes come after Amorim was dismissed on Monday following a turbulent 14 months in charge. United are planning to appoint a permanent successor in the summer.
Solskjaer initially stepped in as caretaker after Mourinho's departure in December 2018 and was later confirmed as full-time manager. He remained in the role for nearly three years before being dismissed in November 2021. During his tenure, United finished second in the Premier League in the 2020 to 2021 season and reached a Europa League final, although he ultimately left without winning a trophy. More recently, Solskjaer managed Turkish side Besiktas but was sacked in August after a short spell in charge.
Carrick's interim stint followed Solskjaer's exit, during which he won two matches and drew one. He later took his first permanent managerial role at Middlesbrough, guiding the club to the Championship play-offs in his first season. However, near misses in subsequent campaigns led to his dismissal last June.
As United weigh their immediate options, names such as Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi are being discussed as potential long-term appointments. For now, the focus remains on stabilising the club through the remainder of the season.
