France striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has informed Crystal Palace of his intention to leave the club as interest grows from Premier League and European sides. The 28-year-old has 18 months remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park and, as it stands, is not expected to agree to an extension.

Juventus have made attempts to sign Mateta during the current transfer window but have been unable to meet Palace's valuation, which is understood to be close to £40m. Aston Villa have also maintained a long-standing interest in the striker and are monitoring the situation closely as the deadline approaches.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed last week that the club is open to offers, acknowledging that Mateta's future is uncertain. He stated that with limited time left on the player's contract, a suitable bid would be considered if the striker wishes to move on. If no club meets Palace's asking price, Mateta is expected to remain for the remainder of the season.

Palace have experienced significant upheaval in recent months. After lifting the FA Cup in May, the club sold influential midfielder Eberechi Eze to Arsenal in the summer and lost captain Marc Guehi to Manchester City in January. Glasner has also announced his decision to step down at the end of the campaign, adding further instability.

The Austrian coach recently criticised the club's recruitment strategy following a defeat to Sunderland, suggesting the squad had not been adequately supported. Those comments came shortly after Palace suffered a shock FA Cup exit to non-league Macclesfield, deepening a difficult period for the club.

Mateta's desire to leave has not come as a surprise to those close to the situation. Since his strong return to form over the past 18 months, the striker has been clear about his ambition to compete at the highest level. He has spoken openly about his desire to play in the Champions League and establish himself as a regular for France. That goal now appears more realistic after his senior international debut in October and goals in his last two appearances.

Sources say Mateta is frustrated by what he views as unfulfilled promises regarding a new contract, squad investment and the club's long-term direction. Palace are also dealing with a lengthy winless run, multiple injuries and the absence of key forward Ismaila Sarr, who has been away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite carrying a knee issue, Mateta's Premier League scoring record continues to attract attention. Palace have already invested heavily this month with the signing of Brennan Johnson and may need further reinforcements before the window closes on 2 February to steady a challenging campaign.
