Unai Emery has reached another major milestone in his time at Aston Villa after becoming the fastest manager in the club’s history to record 100 victories. The Spaniard achieved the feat when Villa defeated Lille in the first leg of their Europa League last sixteen tie, further strengthening his reputation as one of the competition’s most successful managers.

Since arriving at Villa Park in October 2022, Emery has transformed the club’s fortunes both domestically and in European competition. His latest achievement highlights the scale of that impact. The 54 year old reached 100 wins in just 181 matches, quicker than any other manager in Aston Villa’s long history.

Emery’s success has been built on consistency and a clear tactical identity. With a win ratio of 55.2 percent, he currently holds the best winning percentage of any manager in the club’s history. Under his leadership, Villa have become a strong side at home and an increasingly competitive team in European football.

Despite the significance of the milestone, Emery chose to play down the achievement after the victory in France. However, the statistics speak for themselves. His 100 wins came significantly faster than the previous benchmark set by Ron Saunders, who is widely regarded as the most successful manager in Aston Villa’s history. Saunders reached his 100th victory at the end of the 1977 to 1978 season, during his fourth year in charge.

Saunders oversaw one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. He guided Aston Villa out of the old Second Division, won the League Cup twice, and delivered the club’s first top flight league title in seventy one years during the 1980 to 1981 season. He also began the campaign that eventually ended with Villa lifting the European Cup in 1982.

Before Saunders, another notable figure was Joe Mercer. Mercer managed the club between 1958 and 1964, leading Villa back to the top flight and securing a League Cup triumph. However, it took him four and a half years to reach 100 wins out of the 119 victories he recorded during his time at the club.

Even earlier in the club’s history, the path to 100 wins took longer. George Ramsay, who oversaw the team during the era when a management committee helped select the side each week, needed 190 games to reach the milestone between 1884 and 1926. His successor W J Smith required 205 matches to achieve the same number.

By comparison, Emery’s record stands out as exceptional. Reaching the century mark in just three years and four months demonstrates the speed of the progress Aston Villa have made under his leadership. His run of victories began shortly after his arrival, with a memorable 3 1 win over Manchester United in November 2022.

Villa’s victory over Lille also carried added importance beyond the record. The result helped restore confidence after a difficult run of form in the Premier League. Before the match, Villa had gone four games without a win domestically, including defeats against Newcastle, Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Captain John McGinn described the result as an important turning point for the team. Speaking after the match, he said the squad needed a reset after a challenging period.

He explained that the past month had not been good but stressed that the team must learn from it and move forward. According to McGinn, the win in France could serve as a building block as Villa attempt to regain their momentum.

Aston Villa remain well placed in the Premier League table as they continue their push for a place in next season’s Champions League. Success in the Europa League could also secure qualification for the competition, adding further importance to their European campaign.

Emery also revealed that he used the struggles of English clubs in the Champions League earlier in the week as motivation for his players before facing Lille. He reminded his squad that European away matches are always difficult and require full concentration.

With Villa balancing domestic ambitions and European progress, Emery’s record breaking achievement underlines the steady rise of the club under his leadership. While the manager himself may prefer to focus on the next challenge, reaching 100 wins faster than any Villa manager before him confirms the impact he has already made at Villa Park.
