Mohamed Salah's nine-year tenure at Liverpool will come to an end when the 2025–2026 season concludes.
Despite the fact that the 33-year-old Egypt international's current contract, which was signed last year, runs through the summer of 2027, Liverpool has confirmed that an agreement has been reached with him to leave Anfield in the summer.
Having won eight trophies, including two Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2019, Salah will depart Liverpool as one of the team's most decorated
players. With 255 goals in 435 games, he is third on the club's all-time top goalscorer list, behind only Ian Rush (346 goals) and Roger Hunt (285).
"Salah is fully focused on trying to achieve the best possible finish to the campaign for Liverpool with plenty left to play for this season. Therefore, the time to fully celebrate his legacy and achievements will follow later in the year when he bids farewell to Anfield," a statement from the club stated.
With 29 goals and 18 assists as Liverpool won the championship in Slot's first season as manager, Salah was the Premier League's top scorer and creator last season.
Salah has 10 goals across all competitions and has five goals and six assists in 22 league games, but his decline in form this season has coincided with Liverpool's difficulties.
In April last year, Mohamed Salah signed a new contract with Liverpool FC, extending his stay until 2027 and earning over £400,000 per week plus bonuses. His future was uncertain earlier in the season after he criticized the club and head coach Slot for not selecting him in several matches, feeling scapegoated for the team's struggles and suggesting a potential exit in January.
Salah was excluded from Liverpool's squad for the Champions League match against Inter, which they won 1-0. The decision involved sporting director Richard Hughes, the club's ownership, and head coach Arne Slot. Prior to the match, Slot expressed uncertainty about whether Salah had played his last game for the team and was surprised by reports of a deteriorating relationship between them.
Salah has rejoined Liverpool's team post-Africa Cup of Nations, starting 13 matches since January 21. His agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, indicated uncertainty regarding Salah's future club prospects for next season.
Salah may attract interest from Saudi Arabia, following in the footsteps of players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. Notably, Al Ittihad, a club in the Saudi Pro League, previously challenged Liverpool's determination in 2023 to retain him.
Al Ittihad was informed that Salah was not for sale; however, their unsuccessful attempt to sign him fostered a connection between the club and the player.
