The 20 year old Benfica winger denied making a racist remark, claiming that Vinícius misheard what was said. However, Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni later stated that Prestianni had admitted to using a homophobic slur instead of a racist one.
UEFA's disciplinary ruling confirms a six match ban, with Prestianni already having served one provisional game. Three of the remaining matches are suspended for two years, meaning they will only be enforced if there is a repeat offence within that period. Prestianni has faced contrasting interpretations of the incident. While UEFA determined a breach involving homophobic conduct, Benfica strongly defended their player and rejected allegations of racism, describing the situation as part of a broader defamation campaign against him.
The club reiterated its full support for Prestianni and maintained confidence in his account of events. In contrast, some figures in football have suggested that if racist abuse had been proven, the punishment would have been significantly heavier.
The case has also reignited debate around disciplinary consistency in football. Authorities including FIFA and IFAB have been reviewing measures related to on pitch communication and conduct, including proposals to penalise players who conceal their mouths during disputes.
