Chelsea FC are now strong favourites to sign striker Khadija Shaw on a free transfer, with her departure from Manchester City expected this summer after contract talks broke down.

Negotiations over a new deal have stalled, despite earlier optimism from both sides. Shaw's current contract runs out in June, and the lack of agreement is set to bring an end to what would be a major loss for City, who depend heavily on their leading scorer.

The timing of the situation has added extra shock around the club. Manchester City had just secured their first Women's Super League title in a decade when reports emerged that Shaw could be on her way out. Although discussions earlier in the year had been positive, confidence within the club gradually faded as talks dragged on without resolution.

City manager Andrée Jeglertz had publicly expressed hope that Shaw would extend her stay, but differences over contract length are believed to have been the main sticking point. Chelsea are understood to have offered a longer deal than City were prepared to commit to, which has given them an advantage in negotiations.

Shaw had initially hoped to remain at City for the long term and even retire at the club, but the breakdown in talks has opened the door to a move elsewhere. Chelsea have quickly positioned themselves as leading contenders for her signature, viewing her as a key addition ahead of the new season.

The Jamaica international has been City's standout attacker for several years, finishing as the club's top scorer for four consecutive seasons. She is also on course to claim a third straight WSL Golden Boot after scoring 19 goals in 21 league appearances this campaign.

Her consistency has made her one of the most important players in the league, and her potential availability on a free transfer has attracted strong interest from top clubs.

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor has refused to directly comment on Shaw's situation but made it clear that elite forwards are a priority for her squad rebuild. She acknowledged that Chelsea's attacking injuries this season highlighted the need for a reliable number nine, especially when compared with rivals who had more stability in that position.

Bompastor also hinted that Chelsea intend to be aggressive in the transfer market, suggesting the club expects to remain competitive at the top level next season.

Shaw's future will also be closely linked to this weekend's FA Cup semi-final between City and Chelsea, adding extra attention to an already high-stakes match.

If the move goes through, it would mark one of the most significant transfers in women's football in recent years and could have a major impact on the WSL title race going forward.
