Barcelona manager Hansi Flick will still take charge of Sunday's El Clasico against Real Madrid following the death of his father, the club confirmed ahead of the match.

Barcelona announced the news on Sunday afternoon and shared a message of support for the German coach and his family during what they described as a difficult time. The club said the entire Barcelona family was sending its love and condolences to Flick after the passing of his father.

Tributes are set to take place before the highly anticipated meeting with Real Madrid at the Nou Camp. A minute's silence will be observed before kick-off, while players from both sides are also expected to wear black armbands as a mark of respect.

Despite the personal loss, Flick has chosen to remain on the touchline for one of the biggest matches of the season. The 61-year-old could guide Barcelona to back-to-back La Liga titles if his side either win or draw against their rivals from Madrid.

Since arriving at the club in May 2024 as the replacement for Xavi, Flick has enjoyed a successful spell in charge. The former Bayern Munich and Germany manager has already collected four trophies during his time with Barcelona and has helped restore consistency and confidence within the squad.

Sunday's clash against Real Madrid carries major significance in the title race, adding even more attention to an already emotional occasion for the Barcelona manager. The match is expected to draw global interest, with supporters from both clubs aware of the circumstances surrounding Flick ahead of kick-off.

Real Madrid also released a statement offering condolences to their rivals' coach. The club, along with president Florentino Perez and the board of directors, expressed sympathy to Flick and his loved ones following the death of his father.

Madrid said they deeply regretted the loss and wished to send support and affection to Flick's family during the difficult period. The statement ended with a message of respect in memory of his father.

The decision for Flick to continue with his duties highlights the importance of the fixture as Barcelona look to move one step closer to another league title. It also reflects the professionalism the coach has shown throughout his career, even while dealing with personal grief.

As the teams prepare for one of football's most famous rivalries, the atmosphere at the Nou Camp is expected to include both fierce competition and moments of reflection in honour of Flick's father before the match begins.
