Bruno Fernandes equalled the Premier League single-season assist record as Manchester United edged a chaotic five-goal win over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.
The United captain set up Bryan Mbeumo with a precise cross from the right, which was turned in to make it 3-1. That assist took Fernandes to 20 for the season, putting him level with Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, with one match still to play.
The result ensured United secured third place under Michael Carrick, who has yet to be officially confirmed as permanent manager. The afternoon also featured an emotional farewell for Casemiro, who received a standing ovation when substituted nine minutes from time after what could be his final home appearance for the club.
United opened the scoring early through Luke Shaw before Forest responded via Morato's header. The match quickly swung again when Diogo Dalot delivered a cross that led to a controversial goal involving Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
Mbeumo appeared to control the ball with his upper arm before his effort deflected into Cunha's path, and the striker finished first time. After a lengthy VAR review and visible frustration from both sets of supporters, the goal was allowed to stand as officials ruled the contact came off Mbeumo's hip.
Forest stayed in the contest and reduced the deficit late on through Morgan Gibbs-White, but could not find an equaliser.
Fernandes had gone into the match chasing the record, having already come close on multiple occasions. When Mbeumo missed earlier chances from his passes, the midfielder was visibly frustrated, knowing the milestone was within reach.
The decisive moment finally arrived when Mbeumo finished Fernandes' delivery, triggering celebrations from teammates who rushed to the captain in recognition of the achievement.
Fernandes might have claimed the record outright, but Dalot hit the post late on after a breakaway, denying him another assist.
Casemiro's emotional exit was one of the biggest talking points of the day, with the midfielder appearing moved as he said goodbye to teammates and supporters.
Elsewhere, Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson impressed, strengthening speculation linking him with a major summer move.
