Jose Mourinho is set for a return to Real Madrid after agreeing to become the club's head coach on a two-year contract, marking his comeback to the Santiago Bernabeu 13 years after his first spell in charge.
The decision comes after a difficult and disappointing campaign for Real Madrid, who ended the season without silverware while also dealing with off-field issues that created instability around the club. Madrid's leadership believes Mourinho can restore discipline and direction to a squad that struggled to meet expectations this year.
An official announcement is expected following Real Madrid's final league match of the season against Athletic Club on Sunday. Mourinho is then expected to be formally presented as the club's new manager next week.
The agreement reportedly includes an option that could extend his stay beyond the initial two years if both parties decide to continue working together.
Real Madrid have been operating under temporary leadership since January after Xabi Alonso was dismissed only seven months into his tenure. Former defender Alvaro Arbeloa stepped in on an interim basis, but the club has now opted for an experienced figure with a proven record at the highest level.
Mourinho is no stranger to Madrid or the pressures that come with managing one of the world's biggest clubs. During his first spell with Los Blancos, he helped build a highly competitive team and developed a strong relationship with club president Florentino Perez, a connection that appears to have played a role in his return.
The Portuguese manager arrives after a season with Benfica. He guided the club to third place in the Portuguese league and completed the campaign without suffering a league defeat. Although Benfica finished behind the top two sides in the standings, Mourinho's work throughout the season was widely praised.
He had signed a two-year deal with Benfica only eight months ago, but his contract reportedly included a release clause worth £2.6 million, allowing him to leave before the end of the agreement.
Reports also suggest Mourinho will not be arriving alone. He is expected to bring four members of his coaching staff from Benfica to Madrid as he begins his second chapter at the club.
