Argentina booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final after producing a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England in Wednesday's semi-final at Atlanta Stadium.

Led by captain Lionel Messi, the defending champions fought back late in the contest to secure a second consecutive appearance in the World Cup final, where they will face Spain on Sunday, July 19, in New Jersey.

The opening half was tightly contested, with neither side managing a shot on target despite several physical challenges and frequent fouls. Both teams struggled to create clear opportunities before the break, leaving the match level at halftime.

Argentina emerged with greater attacking intent in the second half and created several promising chances, but they were unable to find the breakthrough. England, however, made the most of their opportunity.

In the 59th minute, Anthony Gordon scored his first World Cup goal to put England ahead 1-0, raising hopes of a place in the final for the Three Lions.

England looked set to protect their lead, thanks in large part to goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who delivered a series of outstanding saves to keep Argentina at bay as the pressure mounted.

Argentina's persistence eventually paid off in the closing stages. In the 86th minute, midfielder Enzo Fernández struck a superb effort that sailed beyond Pickford to level the score at 1-1 and reignite his team's hopes.

With extra time appearing inevitable, Argentina delivered one final attack in stoppage time. Messi produced a perfectly weighted cross into the penalty area, where Lautaro Martínez rose above the defense to head home the winning goal and complete a remarkable comeback.

The dramatic finish sparked jubilant celebrations among the Argentina players, with Messi embracing his teammates after helping guide the reigning champions into another World Cup final.

Before kickoff, Pickford had spoken about the challenge of facing Messi for the first time on football's biggest stage. The England goalkeeper praised the Argentine legend, saying it was a special opportunity to compete against one of the greatest players in the sport.

Pickford also stressed that England's focus could not be solely on Messi, noting that Argentina possessed quality throughout the squad and that his side needed to be aware of the team's other strengths as well.

Messi, 39, has once again been central to Argentina's impressive World Cup campaign, helping inspire victories over Egypt, Switzerland, and now England. Ahead of the tournament, the reigning champions' captain said winning the previous World Cup had given Argentina greater confidence and urged the team to make the most of its current generation as it pursues another global title.
