Tottenham's difficult start to the season continued as they suffered a 3-2 defeat against Aston Villa, leaving Roberto De Zerbi's side still searching for their first Premier League victory.
Spurs began brightly and created several early opportunities, with Zion Suzuki denying Savio and Archie Gray. However, their inability to turn possession and pressure into a goal eventually proved costly.
Villa struck in first-half stoppage time after Tottenham were temporarily reduced to 10 men while Micky van de Ven received treatment. Andy Robertson's attempted clearance from a corner fell to John McGinn, and after Boubacar Kamara's effort, Johan Manzambi reacted quickly to score from close range.
Tottenham failed to recover after the break. Nicolas Jackson doubled Villa's advantage from a long pass by Suzuki before Emi Buendia produced a superb 25-yard finish into the top corner to make it 3-0.
Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke scored late goals for Spurs, their first league goals of the campaign, but they could not prevent another defeat.
The result leaves Tottenham in the bottom three after five matches, despite spending more than £300m during the summer transfer window. They have now failed to win any of their last 36 league games in which they conceded first.
De Zerbi admitted his team needed to be stronger defensively, particularly when playing with 10 men. He also expressed frustration with the way they conceded, saying the second goal was unacceptable.
The defeat represents Tottenham's worst start to a top-flight season since 2008-09, when they also collected only two points from their opening five matches. They have also gone five league games without a win at the beginning of a campaign for the first time since 1986.
Former Brighton striker Glenn Murray urged supporters to remain patient, pointing to Tottenham's possession, shots and attacking statistics as evidence that improvements are possible. He argued that De Zerbi needs time to integrate the club's numerous new signings.
Villa, meanwhile, showed signs of improvement after a difficult opening to their own campaign. Their summer rebuild has required patience following several important departures, but their victory at Tottenham provided a major boost.
For Spurs, however, the latest setback highlighted familiar problems. Despite significant investment, they remain short of confidence and consistency, while De Zerbi faces increasing pressure to find a solution.
