Manchester United endured a humiliating European defeat against Como, intensifying the pressure on manager Michael Carrick after a performance that exposed serious defensive weaknesses and raised fresh questions about the club's direction.

United's troubles began just 118 seconds into the match when Argentina playmaker Nico Paz opened the scoring. The early setback came only eight days after the English side conceded in the opening minute against Atletico Madrid, making them the first English team to concede within the first two minutes of consecutive major European matches.

The result was particularly embarrassing given the contrasting fortunes of the two clubs. When Manchester United last won the Champions League in 2008, Como were competing in Serie D. Their emphatic victory highlighted the remarkable progress made by the Italian side and the challenges facing the English giants.

Paz proved central to Como's dominance, scoring twice and providing the assist for Tasos Douvikas to extend their advantage. Jacobo Ramon added a fourth with a powerful header, leaving United struggling to contain their opponents and threatening to suffer the heaviest European defeat in their history.

United's worst European loss remains a 5-0 defeat to Portuguese side Sporting in 1964. At one point, Como appeared capable of matching that unwanted record, underlining the scale of the visitors' struggles throughout the encounter.

Carrick attempted to make changes as the match progressed, but his decisions did little to alter the outcome. Matheus Cunha and Andrey Santos, whose combined transfer fees reportedly total £110 million under Ineos ownership, were substituted at half-time as United sought to regain control.

Captain Bruno Fernandes was also withdrawn midway through the second half, making way for Joshua Zirkzee. The changes reflected the manager's frustration as his side continued to struggle against Como's attacking quality and intensity.

United eventually found the net in stoppage time when Zirkzee beat the offside trap and calmly finished a cross from fellow substitute Amad Diallo. However, the late consolation offered little comfort to the travelling supporters after such a disappointing display.

At the final whistle, Carrick appeared to pay little attention to his players as he approached the United fans. He repeatedly raised his hands in apology, a gesture reminiscent of former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the club's 4-1 defeat to Watford in November 2021. Solskjaer was dismissed the following day.
