Tamayo Perry, a renowned surfer and actor, was killed in a shark attack near Oahu's North Shore in Hawaii. The 49-year-old was attacked off Goat Island around midday on Sunday, according to the Honolulu Emergency Services Department. Perry, an Ocean Safety lifeguard since 2016, was found with severe injuries by local surfers, and despite rescue efforts, he was pronounced dead on the shore.
Perry was a celebrated figure in the surfing community and appeared in several films and TV shows, including "Blue Crush," "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," "Hawaii Five-O," and "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle." His contributions to the surfing world and his heroic actions as a lifeguard were widely acknowledged. Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety Chief Kurt Lager stated, "Tamayo’s personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more," highlighting his impact on the community.
Mayor Rick Blangiardi described Perry as a "legendary waterman" who "exemplified bravery, commitment, and a deep sense of duty." He added, "His heroic actions and tireless efforts to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors will never be forgotten."
The attack occurred just before 1 p.m., and emergency services received the first call shortly after. Perry was brought to shore on Malaekahana Beach, where paramedics attempted to resuscitate him. Shark warnings were issued in the surrounding area following the attack.
Perry's surfing career began at age 12, and he quickly gained recognition for his skill and style, winning the Pipeline Masters in 1999. By 2005, he was regarded as one of Oahu's most prominent surfers. His unexpected death marks the second fatal shark attack in Oahu this month. Perry leaves behind his wife, Emilia, and a legacy as a beloved figure in both the surfing and local communities.
