Chris Evans, widely known for his role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is set to receive the prestigious Spirit of Service Award. This honor, bestowed by the Partnership for Public Service, recognizes individuals outside of government whose work significantly contributes to the goal of a better government and a stronger democracy.

Evans, along with his partners Mark Kassen and Joe Kiani, co-founded A Starting Point in 2020. This video-based civic engagement platform aims to create a bipartisan channel of communication between Americans and their elected officials, fostering a more informed electorate. The platform focuses on engaging high school and college-aged youth, encouraging them to understand government processes and participate in civil discussions around key political issues.

The Spirit of Service Award will be presented during the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals ceremony on September 11 at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. This annual event honors outstanding career federal employees for their achievements and contributions to the public good. The Spirit of Service Award, however, is unique in recognizing those outside the government who play a crucial role in enhancing democracy.

A Starting Point has been instrumental in bridging the gap between the public and their elected officials. Over the past week, the platform’s Instagram account has shared updates on FEMA’s response to extreme heat, debates over Washington D.C.’s statehood, and controversial Supreme Court rulings.  By presenting diverse views on key policy issues and hosting accessible online discussions, A Starting Point demystifies government operations for the public.

Max Stier, president and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service, emphasized the importance of engaging young people in civic activities. “Today, only 7 percent of the federal workforce is under the age of 30, and trust in the federal government among young people is low. By connecting with young people, A Starting Point helps build a more civically engaged society, an effective government that looks like the people it serves, and, ultimately, a stronger democracy,” Stier stated.

In a joint statement, Evans, Kassen, and Kiani expressed their gratitude for the recognition and pride in their team at A Starting Point. They highlighted their mission to make civic engagement accessible to everyone and their commitment to supporting a more informed and engaged society.

Chris Evans’ dedication to civic engagement through A Starting Point exemplifies how public figures can leverage their influence for the greater good. His efforts, alongside those of his partners, are paving the way for a more informed and participatory democracy.
