In a heartwarming full-circle moment, Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel from Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’, was moved to tears as she watched her daughter, Delaney Benson, take on the iconic role in a Miami stage production. This emotional event marks 34 years since Jodi first brought the beloved mermaid princess to life.

Delaney starred in a 90-minute immersive version of ‘The Little Mermaid’ at Area Stage in South Miami, a performance that captivated audiences from July 11 to August 4, 2024. The production, noted for its interactive elements, allowed the audience to engage closely with the undersea world, adding a unique twist to the classic tale.

Jodi’s connection to the role of Ariel made watching Delaney’s portrayal even more poignant. She shared that witnessing her daughter perform the character she had once voiced was surreal, describing how Delaney “made Ariel her own” while still capturing the essence of what Jodi and Disney musical legend Howard Ashman originally brought to the role. Jodi attended the show multiple times, alongside her husband, and admitted to weeping throughout each performance as she saw Delaney embody Ariel with a mix of love, strength, and vulnerability.

The bond between mother and daughter has been evident for years, with Delaney growing up around Disney events and even performing alongside her mother in past productions. Delaney’s journey to this role seemed almost destined; she received the news of her casting in a New York hotel room while sitting beside Jodi, making the moment even more special.

Pride for Delaney’s performance extended beyond her immediate family. Paige O’Hara, the voice of Belle from ‘Beauty and the Beast’, praised Delaney, predicting a bright future for her on Broadway. However, Jodi emphasized that her daughter’s success on stage is secondary to the kind of person she is, noting Delaney’s good heart and the joy she brings to those around her.

This touching narrative of legacy and family love resonated deeply with fans and fellow performers alike, underscoring the timeless impact of Disney’s cherished characters across generations.
