In a shocking revelation, supermodel Elle Macpherson has disclosed her private struggle with breast cancer, diagnosed seven years ago. The 60-year-old Australian icon shared her story in her newly released memoir, "Elle," and in a candid interview with Australian Women's Weekly.
Macpherson's journey began with a lumpectomy on Friday the 13th, leading to a diagnosis of HER2 positive estrogen receptive intraductal carcinoma. "It was a shock, it was unexpected, it was confusing, it was daunting in so many ways," she told the magazine, reflecting on the moment that would alter her life's trajectory.
The diagnosis presented Macpherson with a critical decision. Her doctor recommended a mastectomy, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and breast reconstruction. However, the wellness entrepreneur chose a different path, opting for what she describes as a "holistic approach" to treatment.
"I realized I was going to need my own truth, my belief system to support me through it," Macpherson explained. This decision wasn't made lightly; she consulted 32 doctors before settling on her course of action. "Saying no to standard medical solutions was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life," she writes in her book.
Macpherson's choice sparked mixed reactions. Her sons, Flynn, 26, and Cy, 21, had differing views. Cy was wary of chemotherapy, while Flynn, described as more conventional, struggled with his mother's decision. Her ex-partner, Arki Busson, offered support despite disagreeing with her approach.
The supermodel's unconventional path included consultations with integrative medicine specialists and discussions with the late Olivia Newton-John, who also explored alternative treatments for breast cancer. Macpherson emphasizes that her decision was deeply personal, stating, "There was no 'right' way, just the right way for me."
Today, Macpherson reports being in clinical remission. "I would say I'm in utter wellness. And I am!" she declared to Australian Women's Weekly, citing positive results from various medical tests.
This revelation comes years after a 2013 cancer scare that led Macpherson to reassess her health practices. It also inspired her to co-found WelleCo, a wellness business focusing on nutrition and holistic health.
