Sofia Boutella is back on screens, but this time in a different kind of action film, ‘The Killer’s Game’, where she plays Maize, the love interest of Dave Bautista’s Joe Flood. Interestingly, Boutella is relieved to not be the one doing the heavy action lifting in this project. Having spent most of 2022 filming Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon’ as the fierce Kora/Arthelais, she welcomed the opportunity for a change of pace, even if she still had some physical moments as a retired ballet dancer in the film.

In ‘The Killer’s Game’, Boutella shares the screen with her ‘Hotel Artemis’ co-star Dave Bautista, this time showcasing their bond through a romantic arc. Their connection, forged off-camera during ‘Hotel Artemis’, was instrumental in keeping Boutella on board, despite scheduling conflicts.

Though ‘Rebel Moon’s future is somewhat uncertain due to changes in Netflix’s approach to big-budget projects, Boutella hints at the redemptive journey her character was set to continue. Her character, Kora, was evolving toward becoming the new “Redeemer,” inspired by the myth of Princess Issa. This mirrors the transformation she experienced after a pivotal moment when Kora was forgiven by the current Princess Issa—a powerful scene that fueled her ongoing quest for redemption.

For Boutella, playing Kora was more than just an action role. She connected with the character on a deep, emotional level, describing Kora’s struggle as akin to addiction—something she had to control despite the pull it had on her. This duality made Kora one of her most complex roles to date, one that pushed her to embrace both physical and emotional challenges.

As ‘The Killer’s Game’ hits theaters and ‘Rebel Moon’ Part Two approaches, Boutella’s versatility shines through in both action and dramatic roles. Whether dancing gracefully or unleashing Arthelais, her commanding presence continues to captivate audiences.
