Taylor Swift has publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 U.S. Presidential election, following the first debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump. Swift took to Instagram to announce her support, stating, "I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I'm voting for Kamala Harris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them."
This endorsement follows a trend for Swift, who voiced her political stance more openly during the 2020 election when she endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. In her post, she praised Harris saying, "I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman's right to her own body for decades."
Swift's Instagram post also addressed misinformation spread by AI-generated images falsely claiming she supported Trump, stating, "It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation." She explained that this prompted her to be transparent about her voting plans, encouraging others to do their research before making a decision.
Her post was signed "Childless Cat Lady," a jab at Trump's running mate, JD Vance, who had previously referred to Harris and other prominent Democrats as "childless cat ladies." This sarcastic sign-off was a clear rebuttal to Vance's comments, which had been widely criticized.
Swift's endorsement was part of a wider conversation around Harris's policies, which were discussed during the debate. Harris defended her record, especially concerning gun control, stating, "Tim Walz and I are both gun owners. We're not taking anybody's guns away." Meanwhile, Trump focused on questioning Harris's achievements while in office.
Swift, who has historically refrained from political commentary for much of her career, has become more vocal in recent years, supporting Democratic candidates and advocating for women's rights and LGBTQ+ issues.
In closing her post, Swift emphasized the importance of voter registration and urged her followers to make informed choices in the upcoming election, saying, "I've done my research, and I've made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make."
