Shailene Woodley aspires to defy social conventions. The former cast member of Big Little Lies opened up about why she finds the American pornographic industry's portrayal of sex to be so inaccurate, calling it "bacon hanging in front of a dog."
In an interview with She MD on September 24, Shailene said, "The way that sex is presented on the surface in this country is so fabricated, and it's such a performance instead of true intimacy, vulnerability, and connection."
As a matter of fact, the Three Women actress, who identified as a "very sexual person," asserted that most people are unaware that they are indulging in the fast food equivalent of pleasure. "Oh god, this is like junk food," she said, expressing how people would view porn if they were aware of the possibilities in sexuality.
The 32-year-old went on, "I think we don't necessarily even know what's possible when it comes to pleasure, and we just rip each other off of it." "And you're selling McDonald's to everyone when you could have like, whoa," is my main issue with porn.
And Shailene felt lucky to have reached this conclusion early on thanks to a good experience with an ex. Shailene split from NFL player Aaron Rodgers in February 2022, one year after they announced their engagement.
"I was very lucky in my life as a young person discovering myself and my body to have a partner at the time who loved to dance," she said. "Since [sex] is a dance, I always refer to it as such. We are transferring energy. The dance can be loud and soft at the same time, a fast tango at one moment and a slow groove at another."
Wishing she could now impart some of her knowledge to others, Shailene says she was able to "discover myself because there was a comfortability together."
"I hope, in a way, I could do sex," the actress said. "Not me personally—but go into a sex education curriculum and be like, 'How can we fix this? How can we change this a little bit?'"
