In a heartwarming gesture, Johnny Depp surprised young patients at the Donostia University Hospital in San Sebastián, Spain, on September 26, 2024. The 61-year-old actor, known for his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, donned his famous costume to bring smiles to the faces of children in the Pediatrics and Oncology wards.

Depp was in Spain for the San Sebastián Film Festival, where his latest directorial project, “Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness,” premiered. Despite his busy schedule, he took time to visit the hospital, a gesture that has become a cherished tradition for the actor. Over the years, Depp has visited children’s hospitals worldwide, from Vancouver to Paris, always dressed as the beloved pirate.

During his visit, Depp interacted with the young patients, playing and laughing with them while staying in character as Captain Jack Sparrow. The hospital staff shared photos of the visit on social media, expressing their gratitude for Depp’s time, support, and energy. “From all the staff of the Donostia University Hospital, we would like to express our infinite gratitude to Johnny Depp for his time, his support, and his energy, as well as to @sansebastianfes for having facilitated this visit,” the hospital’s post read.

This visit is particularly poignant given Depp’s personal connection to children’s hospitals. His daughter, Lily-Rose, was treated for kidney failure at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London in 2007, an experience Depp has described as the darkest period of his life. Since then, he has made it a mission to bring joy to hospitalized children, saying, “For me, it’s a gift. They give me the gift”.

Depp’s visit to the Donostia University Hospital was a highlight of his time at the San Sebastián Film Festival, where he also spoke about his new film and his personal connection to its subject, Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. “Each has their story. Sure, we can say that I’ve been through a number of things here and there. But, you know, I’m alright,” Depp said during a press conference.

Johnny Depp’s ongoing commitment to using his fame for good continues to inspire, proving that even the smallest gestures can make a significant impact on those who need it most.
