Billie Eilish is choosing to keep her personal life under wraps going forward. The 22-year-old "Birds of a Feather" artist revealed in Vogue's November cover story that she regrets opening up about her attraction to women, which she discussed in last year's Variety Power of Women interview, admitting that she's often "intimidated by their beauty and presence."
"I wish people didn't know anything about my sexuality or who I'm dating. Ever, ever, ever," Eilish shared. "I'm done talking about my sexuality and my relationships."
Eilish explained that her decision is due to the overwhelming reaction her past comments received, realizing that, "everything I say seems to become worldwide news."
She clarified that she hadn't intended to publicly come out, but assumed fans had already picked up on her romantic inclinations through her music and other clues. "I thought, 'Isn't it obvious?,'" she remarked.
Eilish, who released her third album Hit Me Hard and Soft in May, acknowledged that navigating fame is still a learning process, and she intends to be more cautious with her words. "We're all just growing up and figuring things out," she reflected.
Previously, Eilish was in a relationship with Jesse Rutherford from the band The Neighbourhood. They dated for eight months before parting ways in May, but reportedly remain on good terms. Before that, she was linked to actor Matthew Tyler Vorce from April 2021 to May 2022, and she had also dated rapper Brandon Q. Adams, also known as 7
, whom she mentioned in her Apple TV+ documentary Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry.
In a 2021 Elle interview, Eilish expressed frustration with the scrutiny over her love life, pointing out a double standard. "Like, why is my personal life everyone else's business? Where's that energy with men? I just wanted to make music. I never asked for people to focus on my personal life," she said.
As she moves forward, Eilish plans to maintain more privacy around her relationships, focusing on her music and learning to navigate the challenges of fame.
