In the post-NFL life of Jay Cutler, the former Chicago Bears quarterback was arrested Thursday evening in downtown Franklin, Tennessee, following a minor traffic collision that led to multiple charges, including DUI and illegal firearm possession.
According to the Franklin Police Department's official statement, officers responded to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. local time, where they found Cutler, 41, had rear-ended another vehicle. The responding officers noted clear signs of intoxication, including "a strong odor of alcohol, slurred speech, and bloodshot eyes."
The situation escalated when officers discovered two firearms in Cutler's vehicle, including a loaded pistol. After refusing field sobriety tests, Cutler was taken to a local hospital where authorities obtained a blood sample through a warrant. He was subsequently charged with DUI (first offense), possession of a handgun while under the influence, implied consent violation, and failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision.
Franklin PD spokesperson confirmed that Cutler was released on a $5,000 bond later Thursday night. This incident represents the first known brush with the law for the former NFL star, who played 12 seasons in the league before retiring in 2017.
The arrest comes amid recent changes in Cutler's personal life. His ex-wife, Kristin Cavallari, recently disclosed modifications to their custody arrangement for their three children – Camden (11), Jaxon (9), and Saylor (8) – during an October episode of her "Let's Be Honest" podcast, though specific details weren't revealed.
The timing is particularly noteworthy as it follows Cutler's recent relationship with Samantha Robertson, which became public in September 2023. Their last documented interaction was a beach outing shared on social media in January 2024, though the current status of their relationship remains unclear.
Cutler's representatives have not responded to requests for comment as of Friday morning. The former quarterback is expected to face court proceedings in Franklin, Tennessee, though a date has not yet been announced by local authorities.
