Nicole Kidman faces a profound personal loss - the sudden passing of her beloved mother, Janelle Ann Kidman. As the 57-year-old actress navigates this heartbreak, she is also embracing pivotal roles that push the boundaries of her craft.
Nicole's mother, who was 84 years old, died just hours before the actress was set to accept the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her performance in the erotic thriller "Babygirl." Delivering the news on Kidman's behalf, director Halina Reijn said, "Today I arrived in Venice to find out shortly after, that my beautiful, brave mother Janelle Ann Kidman has just passed."
In a candid conversation with Vanity Fair, Nicole reflected on the profound impact her mother had on her life and career. "She was my compass in a way," Kidman shared. "It's like losing that, but at the same time going, Okay, well, this is for her then. So much of what she wanted for my sister and I was to create women in this world who felt like they could express themselves and have opportunities, especially things she didn't have from her generation."
Nicole emphasized that her mother "loved my career, she really did." She added, "She would be there through all the ups and downs, all of it. Her essence has been pretty much the driving force through my whole life. I wish she could have seen this part of it. She was very excited to see 'Babygirl,' and she was excited to see 'The Perfect Couple' too, but she didn't get to see either of those."
In the wake of her mother's passing, Nicole took to social media to express her gratitude for the outpouring of support. "My sister and I along with our family want to thank you for the outpouring of love and kindness we have felt this week," she wrote. "Every message we have received from those who loved and admired our Mother has meant more to us than we will ever be able to express."
Despite the heartbreak, Kidman has continued to push the boundaries of her craft. In "Babygirl," the Oscar-winning actress plays a high-powered married company boss who falls for a younger intern, played by Harris Dickinson. Kidman's other recent release, "The Perfect Couple," sees her portraying a famous novelist whose son's wedding is disrupted by a murder.
Looking back on her decision to take on these bold, erotic roles, Kidman said, "If it's seen as a risk, I'll take these risks. And if they're bold risks, then I'll take those risks." Her unwavering commitment to her craft, even in the face of personal tragedy, is a testament to her resilience and the driving force that her mother instilled in her.
