Elton John has recently shared an update regarding his ongoing vision issues, revealing that he is unable to see the stage during performances, including his new musical *The Devil Wears Prada*. This revelation came during the gala opening of the show in London on December 1, 2024, where he spoke candidly about the challenges he has faced. At 77, John explained to the audience that due to his eyesight problems, he was unable to witness the performance but had enjoyed the sound of it.
John's vision struggles began in the summer of 2024, after he contracted a severe eye infection while vacationing in the south of France. In an emotional Instagram post in September, the Grammy-winning artist shared that the infection had caused him to lose vision in his right eye, leaving him with limited sight in his left eye. Despite this setback, he expressed gratitude for the care he received from his medical team and family. "I am healing, but it's an extremely slow process," he wrote, acknowledging the lengthy recovery ahead.
In a November interview, John further discussed the impact of his vision loss on his professional life. He admitted that his right eye remains completely blind, while his left eye's condition has hindered his ability to read or watch anything, including lyrics. This has particularly affected his ability to work on new music with his long-time collaborator, Bernie Taupin. John remains hopeful but admitted to feeling "stuck" at the moment due to his vision difficulties.
"I haven't been able to come to many of the previews because I have lost my eyesight. So it's hard for me to see it. But I love to hear it, and boy, it sounded good tonight," John shared, highlighting his characteristic optimism. His husband, David Furnish, has been instrumental in supporting him through this challenging period
At the gala performance of *The Devil Wears Prada*, which serves as a fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, John took a moment to thank his husband, David Furnish. Furnish, who has been by his side throughout this challenging time, helped him navigate the event and provided support as he coped with his vision loss. John called Furnish "my rock," emphasizing the importance of family during difficult moments.
The musical itself, based on Lauren Weisberger's 2003 novel and subsequent film, premiered at the Dominion Theatre in London's West End. It features a star-studded cast, including Vanessa Williams as Miranda Priestly, the iconic character portrayed by Meryl Streep in the movie. The opening night attracted numerous influential figures, including Vogue's Anna Wintour, who has often been associated with the inspiration for Priestly.
Medical professionals are optimistic about John's recovery. He remains positive, stating, "I am healing, but it's an extremely slow process." His gratitude towards his medical team and family underscores his resilient approach to this unexpected challenge.
