Despite making audiences of all genders swoon with his performance, the Wicked actor, who plays Fiyero in the film adaptation of the Broadway show opposite Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba and Ariana Grande's Glinda, has been relatively quiet about whether he's dancing through life with a special someone.

In a recent interview with British Vogue, the 36-year-old stated that he was "not discussing that" in reference to his relationship status, but he was much more open to sharing his path to accepting his gay identity. He said, "I think other people understood my sexuality before I was even aware of it," in an interview that was published on December 12.

The Bridgerton star also described how, in part due to a girl he dated at the time, he gradually came to fully accept his identity as an LGBTQ+ person in his early 20s.

Jonathan went on, "It's interesting with the binary, where you're seen as either this or that." I saw it that way at the time, but there are a lot of subtleties. I didn't feel like I was in the background of that relationship. She is still one of my closest pals.

However, Jonathan recalled a less pleasant experience when he came out to a group of friends in elementary school, even though he is thankful for that particular friendship.

He revealed, "I really, really wanted to have a conversation to see if everyone else was on the same page." "But everyone fell silent."

"I was having trouble with my work, and he said, 'Well, if you weren't so busy being a fairy, you'd understand,'" he added, recalling a slight from a former teacher during those years.

Despite the challenges he has encountered, Jonathan has grown to embrace his identity and even started The Shameless Fund earlier this year to shield LGBTQ+ individuals from discrimination.

He told GQ in 2022, "I got to a point where I thought, f--k this, I'd much rather be able to put my own face picture on or hold my boyfriend's hand in public."
