In the midst of California's devastating wildfires, which have claimed 24 lives and destroyed thousands of structures, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's relief efforts have sparked controversy. The couple visited evacuation centers in Pasadena on January 10, 2025, offering support to victims and first responders. While some praised their actions, others, including actress Justine Bateman, strongly criticized their involvement.

Bateman, known for her role in Family Ties, expressed her disapproval on social media, labeling the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as "disaster tourists." She accused them of using the tragic situation for a "photo op," stating, "Meghan Markle and Harry are no better than ambulance chasers."

Bateman's remarks resonated with several others, who echoed her sentiments about the couple's public display during the ongoing crisis. In contrast, Pasadena's Mayor Victor Gordo defended the couple, describing them as "great people" who were genuinely supportive. According to Gordo, they helped lift the spirits of first responders and those affected by the fires, which have ravaged over 14,000 acres.

Their visit included mingling with victims and distributing food parcels at an evacuation center. Meghan was also seen comforting those who had lost their homes. This visit came just hours before the fire's toll was confirmed to have risen to 24 fatalities. Despite Bateman's criticism, some praised the couple for their hands-on approach, which included opening their Montecito home to evacuees.

The wildfires have caused extensive damage, with over 4,000 to 5,000 structures destroyed, including homes of Hollywood celebrities. California Governor Gavin Newsom has termed the situation "like a war scene," underscoring the severity of the crisis. As the fires rage on, President Joe Biden has warned that the death toll is likely to increase.

While the fires spread, Meghan Markle announced the delay of her Netflix series With Love, Meghan, which was set to premiere on January 15. The new release date is now set for March 4, 2025, as she focuses on the ongoing relief efforts. Her decision reflects her acknowledgment of the importance of addressing the immediate needs of the affected communities.
